Abstract of the Disclosure Phthalazine derivatives having phosphodiesterase inhibitory and cardiac stimulating properties are described. The new compounds have the formula: Image wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; (R2)n represents 1 to 3 substituents, each R2 being hydroxy or lower alkyl and n being 1 to 3, or any two moieties R2 constitute a methylenedioxy or ethylenedioxy group attached to adjacent positions of the benzene ring; and Y is attached to the 3- or 4-position of the piperidino ring and represents either (a) a group of the formula -Z1-COR3 wherein Z1 is -CH2- or -N(R4)-, -COR3 is any of various defined acyl radicals, and R4 is hydrogen or any of various defined substituents; or (b) a group of the fonmula -N(R4)-SO2R5 where R5 is any of the values for R3 or is a second- ary or tertiary amino group; or (c) a group of the formula -Z2-CO-NR6R7 where Z2 is -N(R4)- or 0 with the possibility in the former case that R4 and R7 are linked; or (d) a hydroxy, lower alkanoyloxy, lower alkoxy, or a substituted lower alkyl or lower alkoxy group.
