PICKING HEAD FOR LOWBUSH BERRY HARVESTER ABSTRACT The invention relates to a picking head for a harvester of lowbush berries such as wild blueberries. A pair of the heads is floatingly connected to a truss section mounted to the three-point hitch of a tractor adapted to run in reverse. The picking heads are free to follow the contours of the ground. Each picking head mounts a rotating, tine-carrying reel therein, the reel carrying an internal, laterally extending conveyor for removing berries deposited thereon by the harvesting tines. The tines are mounted to a plurality of circumferentially spaced rods which extend the length of the reel. At one end of each rod is an L-shaped bracket, at the free end of which is a roller member that is receivable in a cam track fixed to the frame carrying the reel. The cam track controls the movement of the tines as the reel rotates, ensuring an almost vertical orientation of the tines as they enter the plants to be harvested. Thereafter the tines are rotated so that they have a generally circumferential orientation as they pass through the plants to strip berries from the plants and as they are elevated to a dumping position adjacent the top of the reel. At that position the tines deposit the berries in the internal conveyor and then the cam track causes the tines to open relative to the reel so that they can pass through a rotating cleaning brush at the top of the reel. The cam track then causes the tines to close towards the reel until they are again descending towards the ground, the tines then opening to the generallyvertical orientation as they approach the plants for the next pass therethrough. The frame carrying the reel is vertically slidably adjustable so as to control the height of the reel above the ground without altering the pitch angle of the tines.
