ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A polygonal pierce nut which may be automatically flush mounted on a panel in a die set, wherein the nut has a groove surrounding the self-piercing pilot having an inclined outer side wall and flange portions at the corners of the nut, preferably including channels through the flange portions at the bottom of the groove. The die set includes a die button having a clinching lip which deforms the panel into the re-entrant grooves in a two stage continuous deformation to first deform the panel around the inclined outer side groove walls to trap the panel and the panel is then deformed against the groove bottom wall to engage substantially the entire groove bottom wall with the pierced panel edge engaging the groove inner wall. The main portion of the panel is bottomed against the flange portion faces generally parallel to but spaced below the piercing face of the pilot with portions deformed into the nut channels. The die set also includes a nose member configured to closely receive the polygonal nut which supports the nut at the corners during installation, preventing deformation of the flange portions and preferably including channels through the end portion, spaced from the nut corners, which permit escape of nut fragments and preventing jamming of the die set.
