ABSTRACT: The invention relates to an electronic flash unit in which a gas discharge flash lamp is ignited by means of a piezo-element. In accordance with the invention a series connection of a rectifier is included between the piezo-element and the starting electrode of the flash lamp, and a substantially undamped parallel circuit of a capacitor and an induct- ance is connected between the starting electrode and a main discharge electrode. In this way it is achieved that the igniting signal for the discharge flash lamp consists of a pulse train of alternating polarity whereupon the lamp ignites in a reliable manner.
