The present invention embodies a piezo-pyroelectric energy converter (10) and is directed to a method and apparatus for conversion of thermal energy to electrical energy and electrical energy to refrigeration. The present invention utilizes one or more piezo-pyroelectric materials (12, 62, 72) with thermally conductive metal electrodes (14, 64, 68), which resonate at a high frequency and are in thermal communication with a hot heat sink (16) and a cold heat sink (18) to create a thermal gradient and heat flow along the metal electrodes (14, 64, 68) and the piezo-pyroelectric material (12, 62, 72).

On décrit un convertisseur d'énergie piézo-pyroélectrique (10), ainsi qu'un procédé et un appareil permettant de convertir l'énergie thermique en électricité et celle-ci en une capacité de réfrigération. On décrit l'utilisation d'un ou plusieurs matériaux piézo-pyroélectriques (16, 62, 72), dotés d'électrodes métalliques (16, 64, 68) conductrices thermiques, qui résonnent à une fréquence élevée et sont placés en communication thermique avec un puits de chaleur chaud (16) et un puits de chaleur froid (18) afin de créer un gradient thermique et un flux de chaleur le long des électrodes métalliques (14, 64, 68) et du matériau piézo-pyroélectrique (12, 62, 72).
