A novel train of Adonis aestavalis having an average of 18 - 22 petals per flower head and containing an average of 200 - 350 µg of astaxanthin pigment per flower head is cultivated, harvested and extracted to provide a source of natural astaxanthin. The extracted astaxanthin, or the harvested astaxanthin-containing plant material, can be used for example in salmonid fish diets to promote correct flesh pigmentation of the fish.

Une nouvelle souche (d'Adonis aestivalis ayant une moyenne de 18 à 22 pétales par capitule et contenant une moyenne de 200 à 350 mug de pigment astaxanthine par capitule est cultivée, récoltée et extraite pour obtenir une source d'astaxanthine naturelle. L'astaxanthine extraite, ou le matériau végétal contenant l'astaxanthine récoltée, peut être utilisée par exemple pour l'alimentation de poissons salmonidés en vue d'amélioer la pigmentation de la chaire du poisson.
