A pilot stage for pressure control valves comprises an axially displaceable valve piston (110) which bounds a valve chamber (141) axially on one side and includes a valve seat (140) for a closure cone (104) therein. Valve piston (110) has an actuating surface in a pressure chamber (164) that is substantially larger than the free cross-section of the valve seat (140). By pressurization of this pressure chamber (164), a large hydrostatic force is exerted on the valve piston (110) which opposes the closing force of the pressure-setting spring (106). A housing stop (130) fixes a first axial end position of the valve piston (110) in the direction of this hydrostatic force. The pilot control stage has improved properties both in manually adjustable pressure control valves and in proportional pressure control valves.
