PILOT VALVE Abstract of the Disclosure A monitor-actuator pilot valve operable with a safety valve in a fluid flow system such as oil and gas wells responsive to either a low fluid flow pressure or electrical failure for closing the safety valve. The safety valve is held open by a control fluid pressure supplied into an actuator cylinder from the line pressure protected by the safety valve. The pilot valve includes a body having a first flow passage communicating with the line pressure, a second flow passage communicating with the safety valve actuator cylinder, a third exhaust flow passage open to the atmosphere, and a fourth flow passage connectable with fluid pressure reset means. A valve assembly positioned in the pilot valve body operates in response to a low pressure in the first passage or electrical failure to connect the second and third passages for exhausting the fluid pressure from the safety valve cylinder to close the safety valve. An electromagnet is secured with the valve body and mechanically coupled by a trigger assembly with the pilot valve assembly for opening the pilot valve assembly in response to a power failure to exhaust the safety valve actuator cylinder allowing the safety valve to close. A reset member in the valve body is operable with the valve assembly for restoring the pilot valve to operation either manually or hydraulically. A hydraulic piston connected with the reset member responds to hydraulic pressure in the fourth passage for resetting the pilot valve. A manually operable override sleeve is connected with the hydraulic reset piston and the electro- magnet coupling for manually resetting the pilot valve and the electromagnet coupling assembly. The pilot valve is thus operable to close the safety valve in response to either a low pressure or an electrical failure. The low pressure response mechanism is reset hydraulically or manually. The electrical response mechanism is reset only manually.
