PIPE COUPLING AND SPLIT-RING USEFUL THEREIN ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A split-ring for use in coupling plastic pipes has an elastic construction enabling it to be widely opened along its split and includes a substantially cylindrical wall with a longitudinal split and a plurality of circum- ferentially-spaced longitudinal ribs formed in its outer surface which is tapered. The height of the ribs increases along the length of the split-ring so that the top lands of the ribs define the outer tapered surface. To form a pipe coupling the split-ring is used with a housing having external threads and an internal axial bore for receiving one end of a pipe. The split-ring is applied around the pipe together with a sleeve which is formed at one end with threads that cooperate with the threads of the housing and at its opposite end with an internal conical surface that engages the top lands of the ribs to cause the split-ring to close the split and to clamp the pipe tightly when the sleeve is threaded onto the housing.
