A pipe freezing apparatus comprises a multi-cavity adapter (20) and an evaporator (36) adapted to be fitted therein. The present invention uses a multi-cavity adapter having from two to eight cavities (42- 48) to fit standard plumbing pipes in copper, steel and plastic, metric and US standard. The refrigeration evaporator fits into a cylindrical bore (36) in the core of the radial multi-cavity array. The cavities are arrayed around the circumference of the bore. The adapter body that forms the array is of aluminum or the like. The coolant lines (132, 134) are elbowed at 90 degrees to the evaporator's longitudinal axis to facilitate attachment to the pipe in small or tight spaces and from the side of the pipe. The adapter body freely swivels around the evaporator thus reducing wear on the refrigeration tubes as the adapters are mounted on the section of pipe to be frozen. Thus any of the cavities can be lined up with the pipe. A set of special retainer mechanisms (90, 92) is used to tightly secure the adapter bodies to the section of pipe to be frozen, thus providing for close thermal contact.
L'invention concerne un dispositif de congélation de conduit comprenant un adaptateur (20) à cavités multiples et un évaporateur (36) conçu pour y être logé. La présente invention met en oeuvre un adaptateur à cavités multiples pourvu de deux à huit cavités (42-48) servant à loger des conduits de plomberie standard en cuivre, en acier et en plastique, ces conduits présentant des dimensions aux normes américaines ou exprimées selon le système métrique. L'évaporateur de congélation vient se loger dans un alésage cylindrique (36) au centre de la structure radiale à cavités multiples. Les cavités sont agencées autour de l'alésage, et le corps de l'adaptateur qui forme cette structure est en aluminium, par exemple. Les lignes de refroidissement (132, 134) forment un angle de 90 degrés par rapport à l'axe longitudinal de l'évaporateur, de manière à faciliter les opérations de fixation au conduit dans des espaces réduits ou serrés et depuis le côté du conduit. Le corps de l'adaptateur pivote librement autour de l'évaporateur, ce qui limite la pression exercée sur les tubes de congélation lorsque les adaptateurs sont montés sur la section de conduit à congeler. Chacune des cavités peut ainsi être alignée avec le conduit. Un ensemble de mécanismes spéciaux (90, 92) de rétention est utilisé pour fixer fermement les corps de l'adaptateur à la section de conduit à congeler, d'où un contact thermique étroit.
