A pipe stem for a modular smoker's pipe of the dry bowl type is disclosed which has four modules to which a bowl assembly can be attached. The pipe stem has four separate modules; 1) the shank which is cylindrical and hollow in form; 2) an elongate bit (bit) which is also hollow and which serves as the mouthpiece of the pipe; 3) a shank insert having an upper hole through which smoke is allowed to pass and a lower hole through which liquid is allowed to pass; and 4) an elongate bit insert (bit insert) fashioned in much the same manner as the shank insert; however, the bit insert has an axially extending hollow tube at one end, whereby the tube has an outer wall with a shape, size and configuration such as to be removably insertable in said shank insert. The shank insert and the bit insert, which both fit inside the shank and the bit respectively, resist the tendency to rotate inside the shank and the bit through the use of a keyway. The outer surface of both inserts has two grooves running along opposite sides of the insert which will accept corresponding ridges (keys) on the inner surface of the shank and the bit. Modules in previous modular smoker's pipes are intricate and difficult to manufacture. The present invention retains all of the advantages of a dry bowl smoker's pipe while reducing the difficulty of manufacturing.
