A pipe having a filament wound fiber preform and a method of producing the pipe is provided. First, the method involves creating a rigid preform by coating a fiberglass awing with an epoxy or a polyester resin; filament winding the fiberglass roving to form a structure having a sidewall defining openings through which a second resin is capable of penetrating; and curing the epoxy or polyester resin. Next, a second resin, such as dicyclopentadiene, is centrifugally cast or reaction injection molded around the preform so that the second resin encases the preform. Finally, the second resin is cured to form a pipe. This method permits the manufacture of large diameter reinforced pipe capable of withstanding high pressures.
