The flow characteristics of a fluid flowing through a pipeline are improved by cutting essentially parallel longitudinal grooves in the interior surface of the pipeline. The grooves are aligned with the flow direction. The grooves are preferably cut with a pigging tool equipped with a cutting element which acts upon the interior surface of the pipeline.
