Piston compressor for compressing gas, comprising a frame with at least one cylinder which has an essentially horizontal axis, a piston which is reciprocable in the cylinder, a piston rod which at one end thereof is fixed to the piston, while the other end thereof is coupled to a crosshead which is guided in the frame and is reciprocable by a drive mechanism, and bearing means which support the piston/piston rod unit, formed by the piston and the piston rod connected thereto, relative to the frame. The bearing means comprise: a source which continuously delivers a gas under pressure, conduit means which are connected to the source and open out at at least one outflow opening for supplying the gas coming from the source to a position between the piston and the cylinder, the postion of the at least one outflow opening and the pressure of the gas supplied from the source being such that gas supplied to a position between the piston and the cylinder constantly exerts an upward pressure on the piston/piston rod unit.

Ce compresseur à piston, destiné à comprimer du gaz, comprend un cadre pourvu d'au moins un cylindre possédant un axe essentiellement horizontal, un piston à mouvement alternatif dans le cylindre, une tige de piston fixée à une de ses extrémités au piston tandis que son autre extrémité est accouplée à une crosse de piston, laquelle est guidée dans le cadre et déplacée en mouvement alternatif par un mécanisme d'entraînement, ainsi que des moyens de support, par rapport au cadre, de l'unité piston/tige de piston, formée par le piston et la tige reliée à celui-ci. Les moyens de support comprennent: une source délivrant de manière continue un gaz sous pression, un conduit relié à la source et ouvrant sur au moins une ouverture d'échappement destinée à fournir le gaz provenant de la source en un point situé entre le piston et le cylindre, l'emplacement de cette ouverture et la pression du gaz fourni par la source étant étudiés de sorte que le gaz envoyé en un point entre le piston et le cylindre exerce constamment une pression dirigée vers le haut sur l'unité piston/tige de piston.
