A thermally activated relief device (50) which resists extrusion-related failures even at high pressures and yet reliably activates to relieve pressure in a vessel and to prevent a catastrophic pressure rupture of a vessel is provided. The thermally activated relief device (50) includes a (52) body having an inlet (54), an outlet (56), and a fluid flow passage (58) communicating with the inlet and outlet. The body further includes a fluid escape passage having a (60) member therein which is porous to gases and liquids but not to solids. A plug (62) of a fusible material which melts at a predetermined temperature is positioned adjacent to the porous member and normally seals the fluid escape passage. A piston (64) is normally biased into a sealing relationship with the inlet, but, when the fusible plug melts, moves upwardly to open the flow passage and relieve fluid pressure.

Cette invention concerne une soupape de sûreté à déclenchement thermique (50) qui résiste à la rupture à l'endroit des défauts d'extrusion même à haute pression et qui assure une protection fiable par évacuation de la surpression pour prévenir la ruine catastrophique du réservoir. La soupape de sûreté (50) objet de l'invention comprend un corps (52), une ouverture d'admission (54), une ouverture d'évacuation (56) et un passage (58) reliant ces deux ouvertures. Le corps comprend en outre un passage d'évacuation (60) obturé par un élément perméable aux gaz et aux liquides qui s'oppose cependant au passage de matières solides. Un bouchon fusible (62), qui fond à une température prédéterminée, est placé sous l'élément perméable (60) pour fermer le passage d'évacuation de façon étanche, en temps normal. Un piston (64) plaqué par un ressort contre l'ouverture d'admission pour l'obturer se déplace vers le haut lorsque le bouchon fusible a fondu et libère ainsi le passage permettant d'évacuer la surpression régnant dans le réservoir.
