A support prop having a very compact construction and a pressure limiting valve with high throughflow quantities, uses the prop head as valve housing, so that the pressure limiting valve advantageously can be integrated in the prop head. Pushing in speeds of above 3 metre per second can be achieved hereby and by the particular embodiment of the overall support prop. One, or if necessary two, releasable non-retum valves serve as withdrawal and setting valve, which, with little expense, can be applied on the outside at the inner prop and which allow a rapid setting and also withdrawal, in that a return of the release pressure medium is made possible. During withdrawal the release pressure medium flows by means of the connection of the releasable non-return valve designed as set pistol, and then can be led back into the circuit.
