An auxiliary step (10, 20) for a stirrup (12) associated with a saddle (17) wherein the auxiliary step (10, 20) is mounted so as to be pivotable from a first position generally adjacent to the stirrup (12) to a second position spaced below the stirrup (12) to thereby assist a rider in mounting the saddle (17). In a preferred embodiment, the step (10, 20) is positively urged to the first or raised position adjacent to the stirrup (12) when not being used to assist the rider in mounting.
