A flat-panel modulator includes a plurality of separately modulatable elements or pixels in which the modulating elements on the panel are arranged, notionally or physically, into patches or blocks (shown schematically as 53a, b, c) of individual modulating elements such that space between each patch exists which has no modulating elements. Addressing lines can be located in the space between the blocks, decreasing resistivity. Also the optical resolution of the magnifying optics is much better than if the entire panel were imaged as a whole. Furthermore a seamless image can be built up using suitable optics (51) between the modulator blocks and a screen (52), at least some of the blocks being magnified.

L'invention concerne un modulateur de panneau plat. Ce modulateur comprend plusieurs éléments d'images ou pixels pouvant être modulés séparément, dans lesquels les éléments de modulation sont disposés sur le panneau, physiquement ou théoriquement, en carrés ou blocs (schématiquement illustrés en figures 53a, b, c) d'éléments de modulation individuels. Ainsi il existe un espace entre les carrés qui ne comporte aucun élément de modulation. Les lignes d'adressage peuvent être placées dans l'espace entre les blocs, réduisant ainsi la résistivité. En outre, la résolution optique du système optique de grossissement est bien meilleure lorsque la totalité du panneau est visualisée dans son ensemble. En outre, une image sans raccord peut être formée à l'aide d'un système optique approprié (51) entre les blocs du modulateur et un écran (52) et au moins certains blocs sont grossis.
