11 ABSTRACT: Planar optical waveguide with a crystal unit, comprising a non-magnetic substrate with a first magneto optical layer applied epitaxially to the substrate and a second magneto-optical layer applied epitaxially to the first magneto-optical layer, whereby both magneto-optical layers are composed of an iron garnet-based material, whereby the second magneto-optical layer has a refractive index n which is approximately 1 x 10-3 to 1 x 10-2 greater than the refractive index of the first magneto- optical layer and whereby there is present in the material of the magneto-optical layer at least one substituent at the dodecahedral site of the garnet lattice, in particular lead, the proportion of which is different in the mater- ials for the first and for the second magneto-optical layer. The optical waveguide can be used to advantage for optical single-mode waveguides in the spectral range 0.8< .lambda. < 1.6/um.
