ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A planetary gear system comprises a primary shaft, a propeller shaft, a number of intermediate shafts, a planet support of at least one of the shafts,and at least two planet wheel journals on the planet support. At least two ?net wheel journals each are provided with a planet friction wheel contacting a surrounding friction ring and a friction sun wheel provided on an adjacent shaft. At least one of the planet wheel journals is provided with a planet gear wheel, which co-operates with a surrounding ring gear, and a sun gear provided on the adjacent shaft. The intermediate shafts do not have to be provided with bearing and centering means since these functions can be accom- plished by the elements of the gear system. Thus the axial length of the gear system can be minimized.
