ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A planetary gear transmission for motor vehicles mounted in a group configuration with a basic transmission and arranged in a row with a group transmission. The basic transmission consists of a gear change box having firmly attached dividing gears and a gear step sequence that goes from the first to the highest gear in decreasing intervals. The group transmission is shifted only once in the whole gear sequence and the number of gears in the basic transmission is increased by a single gear. Clutches, brakes, and free wheels are provided for the automatic shifting of at least four forward gears. The shifting of the group trans- mission occurs between two gears of the basic transmission, or the group transmission is stepped to lower gear and then shifted before the first gear of the basic transmission, and the ratio of the group transmission when it is shifted depends on the ratio of the nearby gears of the basic transmission.
