A planetary engine (40) includes a charge compression system for compressing a charge of air and/or an air and fuel mixture that is precompressed by rotation of the rotors (44) and supplied into a combustion chamber (46) through a rotary valve (50) that may be actively adjusted during operation of the engine to vary the intake valve opening size and/or timing. Exhaust valves may likewise be actively adjustable rotary valves for further engine control. A compression insert (48) mounted between the end wall assemblies (68,98) absorbs combustion forces and provides rigidity to the engine (40), as well as occupies all or nearly all of the volume between the rotors (44) at the minimum volume of the combustion chamber (46) to improve the compression ratio of the engine (40).

Un moteur planétaire (40) comprend un système de compression de charge pour comprimer une charge dair et/ou un mélange air/carburant qui est pré-comprimé par rotation des rotors (44) et acheminé vers une chambre de compression (46) à travers une soupape rotative (50). Ladite soupape peut être activement réglée lors du fonctionnement du moteur pour faire varier la taille de louverture de la soupape dadmission et/ou sa durée douverture. Les soupapes déchappement peuvent similairement être des soupapes rotatives activement réglables pour un contrôle plus poussé du moteur. Une pièce de compression (48) montée entre les ensembles de parois dextrémité (68,98) absorbe les forces de combustion et assure une rigidité au moteur (40), tout en occupant la totalité ou presque du volume entre les rotors (44) au volume minimal de la chambre de combustion (46) afin daméliorer le taux de compression du moteur (40).
