ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A planing cylinder for planing machines is provided with disposable knives clamped in longitudinal grooves by means of centrifugal keys. A retaining strip which is fixedly connected to the body of the cylinder and is resiliently deformable, is located between the disposable knife and the centrifugal key. The disposable knife is accurately located in clamped condition by positive engagement of the shape of the disposable knife with the corresponding shape of the retaining strip. After the centrifugal key has been released, the disposable knife may easily be withdrawn.
