Abstract of the Disclosure. A plant for treating e.g. foodstuffs, comprising a housing divided into two chambers by a partition, an elevator being arranged in each of the chambers, viz. one for upward and one for downward movement of carriers, supporting the material to be treated, the chambers being provided with means for maintaining different atmospheres in the two chambers and sluice means being arranged so as to permit the carriers to be inserted into one of the chambers, passed through the partition and removed from the other chamber without mixing the atmospheres maintained in the two chambers, the carriers being flexible and forming a carpet during transfer of the carriers between the exit and the inlet opening.
