DNA sequences of an acetyl Coenzyme A carboxylase from plants are inserted into the genome of plants in sense or antisense orientation in order to inhibit expression of the gene product of the endogenous ACCase gene, resulting in reduced conversion of the enzyme's substrate, acetyl Coenzyme A, to fatty acid synthesis, leaving the substrate available for diversion into other biosynthesis pathways. One such diversion may be accomplished by providing the plant genome with genes specifying the synthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoate polymers.

Des séquences d'ADN d'une acétyl-Coenzyme A-carboxylase (ACCase) issue des plantes sont insérées dans le génome de plantes selon une orientation sens ou antisens afin d'inhiber l'expression du produit génique du gène ACCase endogène, entraînant une réduction de la conversion du substrat de l'enzyme, l'acétyl-Coenzyme A, en synthèse d'acide gras, laissant le substrat disponible pour être détourné vers d'autres processus de biosynthèse. On peut détourner ainsi le substrat en munissant le génome d'une plante de gènes spécifiant la synthèse de polymères de polyhydroxyalcanoate.
