ABSTRACT Apparatus for transferring plants from a high density incubating tray containing plants in rows to a planted disposition in a transplant location is provided. The apparatus comprises a continuously passing line of conveyed planting fingers. Each finger is configured for grasping one of the plants by a stem, and the planting fingers move from a plant receiving station to a transplanting location. The tray is oscillated parallel to the direction of the continuously passing line of conveyed planting fingers in a motion including a first stroke in opposition to the direction of the passing fingers and a second stroke synchronized to the speed of the passing fingers. A group of fingers in the continuously passing line of conveyed planting fingers are opened for receiving the plants at their stems during a first part of the second stroke and the group of fingers are closed to grasp the plants during a second part of the second stroke. The incubating tray is extracted from the plants in the fingers during the second part of the second stroke whereby the plants are transferred to the planting fingers and held by the stem with a root bound soil mass depending from the stem. The tray is moved away from plants within the planting fingers to prevent interference between the root bound soil mass of the plants in the fingers and the foliage of plants remaining in the tray.
