A plasma torch is provided having a movable member carrying an electrode and movable along a tubular member bore having a nozzle at one end. A piston member engaged with the movable member moves the electrode between inoperable and operable positions within the bore, the movable member being biased outwardly of the one end of the bore. A first sealing member engaged with the piston member allows a fluid flow into the bore to act on the piston member to move the electrode to the operable position when the nozzle/electrode is engaged with the tubular member. A second sealing member, engaged with the bore, engages the piston member when the nozzle/electrode is removed. The fluid flow enters the bore between the sealing members, the second sealing member thus preventing torch operation when the nozzle/electrode is removed by preventing the fluid flow from acting on the piston member.

L'invention concerne un chalumeau de plasma ayant un organe mobile portant une électrode et se déplaçant le long de l'alésage d'un organe tubulaire ayant une buse à une extrémité. Un organe de piston engagé avec l'organe mobile fait déplacer l'électrode entre des positions opérable et non opérable à l'intérieur de l'alésage, l'organe mobile étant biaisé vers l'extérieur d'une extrémité de l'alésage. Un premier organe d'étanchéité engagé avec l'organe de piston permet à l'écoulement de fluide dans l'alésage d'agir sur l'organe de piston pour faire passer l'électrode en position opérable lorsque la buse/électrode est engagé avec l'organe tubulaire. Un deuxième organe d'étanchéité, engagé avec l'alésage, entraîne l'organe de piston lorsque la buse/électrode est retirée. L'écoulement de fluide entre dans l'alésage entre les organes d'étanchéité. Le deuxième organe d'étanchéité empêche ainsi le fonctionnement du chalumeau lorsque la buse/électrode est retirée, ce qui empêche l'écoulement de fluide d'agir sur l'organe de piston.
