RD-19,520 PLASMA TORCH WITH IMPROVED PLASMA PLUME CHARACTERISTICS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of surface heating a molten metal without spatter is disclosed. It includes the steps of: providing a plasma gun to form a plasma extending from the gun to the surface of said molten metal, operating the gun by transferred arc plasma by making the molten metal the cathode of said gun, imposing a high frequency electric field in said gun to initially ionize the gas therein, feeding gas to the bore of the gun tangentially to impart a swirling motion to the gas, swirling the gas in the gun against the bore wall to protect the inner surface of the gun from the heat of the plasma, and flaring the inner surface of the gun nozzle outward to reduce the swirling action of the gas as the gas leaves the gun orifice.
