The invention provides methods and kits for obtaining a prognosis for a patient having or at risk of developing an inflammatory condition. The method generally comprises determining a Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) genotype of a patient for one or more polymorphisms in the PAI-1 gene of the patient, comparing the determined genotype with known genotypes for the polymorphism that correspond with the ability of the patient to recover from the inflammatory condition and identifying patients based on their prognosis. PAI-1 genotype screening may be useful in identifying patients who would benefit from increased monitoring by healthcare professionals, and/or possible therapeutic intervention, if the patient were to develop inflammation due to systematic inflammation response syndrome (SIRS), bacterial infection, bacteraemia, sepsis, septic shock, organ dysfunction, and trauma. The invention also provides for methods of identifying other polymorphisms that correspond with the ability of the patients to recover from the inflammatory condition.
Cette invention se rapporte à des procédés et à des kits permettant d'obtenir un pronostic pour un patient souffrant d'un état inflammatoire ou présentant des risques de développer un état inflammatoire. De façon générale, ce procédé consiste à déterminer un génotype de l'inhibiteur 1 d'activateur de plasminogène (PAI-1) d'un patient pour un ou plusieurs polymorphismes dans le gène PAI-1 du patient, à comparer le génotype ainsi déterminé avec des génotypes connus pour ce polymorphisme qui correspondent à la capacité du patient à guérir de l'état inflammatoire et à identifier les patients sur la base de leur pronostic. On peut utiliser le criblage des génotypes de PAI-1 pour identifier des patients qui tireraient profit d'une surveillance accrue par les professionnels de la santé et/ou d'une intervention thérapeutique possible, si le patient devait développer une inflammation due au syndrome de réponse inflammatoire systémique (SIRS), à une infection bactérienne, à une bactériémie, à une infection, à un choc sceptique, à un dysfonctionnement d'organe et à un traumatisme. Cette invention concerne également des procédés pour identifier d'autres polymorphismes qui correspondent à la capacité du patient à guérir de l'état inflammatoire.
