ABSTRACT A plastic bag opening apparatus has particular appli- cation to the opening of plastic bags filled with recyclable materials. The apparatus comprises a pair of loops rotating in the same plane in opposite directions at the same angular speed. On each loop a series of tines are mounted in spaced relation, the tines extending normal to the direction of travel of the loop. There is at least one close location at which the loops pass close to each other. When a filled plastic bag is dropped onto the loops at that location, the impact causes the tines to pierce the bag. The spacing between adjacent tines on the same loop and the shortest spacing between tines on the two loops is such that a single hole is created in the bag as the bag moves away from the close location. In one embodiment of the appa- ratus, each loop is the rim of a wheel and tines extend along that rim. In another embodiment, each loop is a chain carrying tines and extending around a pair of wheels.
