A belt with leather-simulating properties comprises outer face sheets of a flexible leather-simulating plastic material on opposite sides of a flexible plastic sheet-like filler material to which the face sheets are attached. In an alternative embodiment, only one outer face sheet of leather-simulating material may be used, in which case the sheet-like filler material provides a backing for the outer face sheet. Further, the outer face sheets may be non-structural face sheets of natural leather. The plastic filler material preferably comprises a synthetic resinous material such as a polyvinyl chloride-containing material of sufficient combined thickness and tensile, flexural, and hardness properties that combine with the outer face sheet(s) to provide a belt with leather-simulating properties. The backing sheet is reinforced with a flexible nylon rein- forcing strip to prevent axial elongation of the belt. The Shore hardness of the backing sheet is near the extreme high range of hardness levels for flexible thermoplastic extrusions. The resulting belt is suitable for heavy duty uses such as for police belts or waist belts used by weight-lifters. The invention also provides a dress belt principally comprised of the plastic filler material. The belt may have one or more outer face sheets of the leather-simulating polymeric material. Alternatively, outer face sheets of leather may be used in combination with the filler material.
