A generally tubular coarse bubble diffuser (10) for aerating waste water is constructed of polyvinyl chloride or a similar plastic material. The diffuser body (44) has a main section (46) with flat side walls (48) through which outlet ports (54, 56) are formed. The opposite ends (58, 60) of the diffuser body are cylindrical and are connected with the main section (46) by transition sections (62, 64) which avoid abrupt changes in the wall thickness or diffuser connector diameter. One end (58) is solvent welded in a plastic Tee fitting (40) and the other end receives a removable end cap (66). The flat walls (48) provide efficient oxygen transfer and the cylindrical ends (58, 60) allow the use of a threaded end cap (66) and a secure large diameter solvent weld connection to the Tee fitting (40) which directs air to the diffuser.
