- 1 - Abstract: The invention provides a plastic optical fiber comprising a core and a cladding. The core is made of a polymer comprising units of methyl methacrylate and of a methacrylate ester, the ester moiety of which has an ali- cyclic hydrocarbon of 8 to 20 carbon atoms. The cladding is made of a fluorine-containing polymer comprising units of the formula: Image (I) wherein R1 and R2 each represent hydrogen or a C1-C3 alkyl group, Rf1 represents fluorine or a trifluoromethyl group, and Rf2 represents a C2-C10 fluoroalkyl group, the units of formula (I) being derived from a fluoroalkyl .alpha.-fluoroacrylate or a trifluoromethacrylate. The plastic optical fibers have short- and long-term heat and humidity resistance as well as low attenuation of light transmission.
