A blow moulded plastics bottle (10) or similar container has a neck (12) formed to receive a bottle closure, a side wall (11) and a base (13), and includes an internal spider (16) attached to the side wall (11) and extending across the inside of the bottle (10). The material in the side wall (11) and spider (16), at least, of the bottle (10) is bi-axially oriented. The plastics bottle is preferably formed by initially injection moulding a preform and then by a stretch-blow moulding technique. The internal spider (16) may extend substantially the whole length of the bottle from its neck to its base, or alternatively, the internal spider (16) only extends over part of the length of the bottle (10). The internal spider (16) preferably has the form of plane webs extending generally radially across the inside of the bottle and joining together at the central longitudinal axis of the bottle . The internal spider (16) formed inside the bottle (10) reinforces the bottles and so helps them to resist an internal pressure and enables a plastics bottle to be formed with shapes that are polygonal in section and preferably square and which have re-entrant curves in their side wall (11).
