ABSTRACT A plate assembly for a linear sliding gate valve for the outlet of a metallurgical vessel comprises a support frame having an aperture therein accommodating a valve plate. The periphery of the plate is surrounded by a metallic casing or band. Clamping means such as bolts or tensioning locks serve to tension the casing or band around the periphery of the valve plate thereby biasing it into contact with the said periphery. The clamping means are positively located with respect to both the casing or band and the support frame and thereby positively locate the valve plate in its own plane with respect to the support frame.
