A play list having an entry that points to a media file in a first format is processed to be played at a client that has a player suitable for rendering files of a second format. A primary description file of the media file is generated at a server. The description file can be used by a second format player to render the first format media file. When a request for the playlist is received at the server from the client, a secondary description file is generated that points to the location of the media file. The server replaces the playlist entry pointing to the media file with an entry pointing to the location of the secondary file. When the client plays the entry from playlist, the client requests and receives the secondary description file, which the client uses to find and render the media file using the second format player.

L'invention concerne le traitement dune liste découte, comprenant une entrée indiquant un fichier multimédia dans un premier format, en vue de sa lecture au profit dun client disposant dun lecteur adapté pour la restitution de fichiers dun deuxième format. Un fichier primaire de description du fichier multimédia est généré au niveau dun serveur. Le fichier de description peut être utilisé par un lecteur au deuxième format pour restituer le fichier multimédia au premier format. Lorsquune demande émanant du client et portant sur la liste découte est reçue au niveau du serveur, on génère un fichier secondaire de description qui indique lemplacement du fichier multimédia. Le serveur remplace lentrée de la liste découte indiquant le fichier multimédia par une entrée indiquant lemplacement du fichier secondaire. Lorsque le client lit lentrée de la liste découte, le client demande et reçoit le fichier secondaire de description, que le client utilise pour trouver et restituer le fichier multimédia à laide dun lecteur au deuxième format.
