39 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Pleomorphic agents may be introduced into a culture medium for a microorganism which produces granules of product in side the cell. The pleomorphic agent alters the nature of the cell wall permitting one or more of the following benefits: increase in cell size; increase in the number of granules per cell; and the excretion of the product into the medium.
