ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is disclosed a pliant, water- absorbent, laminar mass of microbial cellulose which is partially saturated with water and contains a liquid polyhydric alcohol in a cellulose-to-alcohol weight ratio of about 100 to about 0.007. The amount of water present is in the range of about 10,000 to about 30 percent by weight based on the weight of the microbial cellulose present. A method of producing a water-absorbent is also disclosed.
