ABSTRACT An electrical connector assembly includes a plug connector and a socket connector. Both the plug and the socket connectors have diaphragms over their respective connector housings preventing the ingress of foreign matter into the cavities where electrical contacts are received. The plug connector also has sealing means adjacent a rear surface preventing ingress of foreign matter into the cavities containing the contacts from the rear surface of the cavities. The diaphragms are piercedby one set of contacts contained in the housing of the socket contact when the connectors are mated but when the connectors are disconnected frangible portions of the diaphragms substantially eliminate any possibility for the ingress of foreign matter into the cavities.
