ABSTRACT A retrievable well lock for use within a subterranean tubular member. The lock features a packing assembly having a substantially elastomeric sleeve which may be axially compressed into an expanded diameter condition against the interior surface of a surrounding tubing string. Axial ends of the sleeve are configured to engage generally matching notched members on either side of the sleeve which, by divergent axial movement, axially draw the sleeve to a reduced diameter condition and maintain the sleeve under divergent axial tension. A barrel slip assembly of the lock has a radially variable body with a continuous circumference. The body's axial ends are adapted to fixedly engage portions of the lock such that the body is capable of transmitting an axial tensile load across its length. The body contains substantially lengthwise slotted portions which permit radial expansion of the radially variable body. The lock may be emplaced and set at substantially any point within the tubing string and is operable between an expanded diameter condition and a reduced diameter condition. A downhole power tool is described which may be adapted to emplace ("run") or remove ("pull") the lock from the tubing string. The tool features a power assembly and a working assembly proximate the tool's lower end which comprises an inner member and an outer member. The inner member comprises an elongated rod which is adapted to be moved by the power assembly in a generally axial direction. An outer member generally surrounds the inner member and is adapted to engage and exert axial force upon a portion of the lock in a generally opposite axial direction. The power tool includes an integral power assembly which permits extended setting sequences for placing locks. In preferred embodiments, the tool incorporates one or more activation assemblies and a clutch mechanism to disengage the translational force provided by the power assembly from the working assembly. Preferred embodiments of the power tool as a running tool and as a pulling tool are described.
