ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A solenoid apparatus includes a plurality of plate members of which at least some are electromagnets, each of the latter including at least one toroidal coil of conductive wire. Guiding device is connected to the plate members so as to keep them in alignment, and so as to allow the plate members to separate from each other and approach each other while preventing the separation between any adjacent pair of electromagnets from exceeding a given maximum. The device includes means allowing electrical energization of the coils of conductive wire.
