A method for forming a multilayer coating film, which comprises the steps of applying a cationic electrodeposition coating (a) to an article to be coated, followed by heating for curing, applying a water-borne thermoplastic chipping- resistant coating (b), adjusting the solid content of the chipping-resistant coating to 40 wt % or more, applying a water-borne intermediate coating (c), heating both of the applied coating (b) and coating (c) for curing, and applying a top coating (d) followed by curing. A multilayer coating film formed by the above method is excellent in chipping resistance, corrosion resistance and the like.

L'invention concerne un procédé de formation d'un film à revêtement multicouches consistant à appliquer un revêtement (a) par électrodéposition cationique sur un article, à chauffer aux fins de durcissement, à appliquer un revêtement (b) thermoplastique à l'eau, résistant à l'écaillage, à ajuster la teneur en matières sèches de ce revêtement à 40 % en poids ou plus, à appliquer un revêtement (c) intermédiaire à l'eau, à traiter thermiquement les deux revêtements (b) et (c) appliqués aux fins de durcissement, et à appliquer un revêtement final (d) suivi de durcissement. Le film multicouches formé au moyen de ce procédé possède une excellente résistance à l'écaillage, à la corrosion et à des phénomènes analogues.
