A pneumatic agricultural tire 20 for the drive axle of a tractor or like vehicle has a plurality of traction lugs 50 that extend from the shoulders toward the equatorial centerplane of the tread 32 but not crossing it thereby forming a continuous open channel 70 centered at the equatorial plane. The lugs 50 are uniquely designed having an enlarged, steeply inclined riding cleat 65A and a less steeply inclined axially outer lug portion 65B, 65C of substantially narrower width.
