The application relates to a method of transporting granular substances over long or short distances by means of suspending the granules within a moving mass of low pressure air, which is itself restrained in a length of pipe. The moving, low pressure air is generated by one or more lobe blowers which may be driven by electric or other motive power units. The air is introduced into the system at a shallow angle, enabling the air stream to smoothly flow through the accelerator portion with minimum turbulence and loss of energy. The accelerator cone and venturi are responsible for the ultimate speed of the product flow, which may range up to 11,000 feet per minute; the actual velocity will vary with the type of material handled, its density and grain size. Product is introduced into the air stream from the rear in most cases and brought up to its initiation speed by a high speed auger. In reverse action units, the auger is exposed at its entry end, to the product source and conveyed to a curved portion of the pipe before being caught up into the high velocity air stream. The Pneumatic Units are viable in a range of capacities, from 2" diameter up to 12" Distances over which product may be conveyed again vary with the product characteristics, but field measurements up to 600 feet within the pipe and an additional free air delivery of up to 300 feet have been recorded. The inclusion of additional blowers and accelerators at intervals enable the movement of product over very long distances, as for example in a cross country pipeline. The technical field covered by this abstract and application is "the movement of materials within a cushion of air by diffusing in a low pressure air stream"
