Abstract of the Disclosure A control unit and a respiratory apparatus including the control unit are provided, the unit having a valve for controlling the supply of respiratory gas to a patient. The switching of the valve between inhalation and exhalation periods is effected by gas under pressure in two chambers. The filling of the chambers is controlled by a second valve and a regulating valve. The ratio of inhalation period to exhalation period is determined by the ratio of the volumes of the two chambers, and the respiration frequency is determined by these volumes and the setting of the regulating valve. The regulating valve and another regulating valve are mechanically connected so that the respiration frequency and quantity of air supplied to the patient can both be controlled at the same time.
