ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for conveying solid particulate material including a casing having bore therethrough and an inlet for material to be conveyed and an outlet. A screw impeller is rotatably mounted in the casing by front and rear bearings with the rear bearing being near the inlet. The outlet is inter- mediate the inlet and the forward bearing. The screw impeller includes a feed screw section which terminates adjacent the casing outlet and a reversing section with reverse flights between the forward bearing and the casing outlet. A housing carrying the front bearing is mounted on the casing by an intermediate section, and the particulate material is prevented from entering the forward bearing by the reversing section, by a material seal surrounding the impeller and confined by the intermediate section adjacent the forward end of the casing, and by an opening to atmosphere defined by the intermediate section and allowing material which may escape from the bore of the casing to be discharged to atmosphere.
