An apparatus for measuring the effective flow area of a pneumatic restriction, such as a pressure vessel which is to be tested, a pneumatic proximity sensor which is used to measure a distance, or a machine part which is fitted into a gauging device. The apparatus employs a pneumatic bridge arrangement with two branches, a measurement branch and a reference branch. The restriction is connected to the end of the reference branch and substantially the same amount of air that escapes to the atmosphere from the restriction is discharged by the apparatus from the measurement branch to the atmosphere through an inexpensive air flow meter operating at substantially atmospheric pressure. The resulting air flow measurement varies in a substantially linear way with the effective flow area of the restriction when the pressure upstream of the restriction is maintained at a constant value.
