PNEUMATIC TIRE AND WHEEL RIM ASSEMBLY AND TIRE FOR USE THEREIN ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tire and wheel rim assembly including a conven- tional flanged wheel rim and a tire having beads configured to minimize abrasion between the beads and the rim flanges. The axially outboard surface of each bead of the tire is subdivided into a rim flange engaging surface and a free surface. The rim flange engaging surface of each bead is complimentary to the axially inboard surface of the assoc- iated rim flange, and the tire is constructed and arranged to maintain the rim flange engaging surface of each bead in contact with the associated rim flange during normal opera- tion of the assembly. Each free surface, which lies radially outwardly of the associated rim flange engaging surface, diverges axially inwardly from that portion of the associated rim flange which overlies it. The extent of this divergence is sufficient to prevent contact between the free surface of the bead and the associated rim flange during normal operation of the assembly.
