A pocket door assembly includes a door and arms for deploying or retracting the door. Ends of a first arm are movable with respect to the ends of a second arm, which preferably are fixed. A footer can be stowed away within a recess formed in the door and can be linked to one of the movable ends of the first arm. In preferred implementations, the door assembly includes a hinge system that, under certain circumstances, allows the door to swing. A method for closing a passageway includes sliding a door outwardly and upwardly with respect to a pocket; and lowering a footer with respect to the door.
