POINT OF PURCHASE FLAT PANEL ELECTROLUMINESCENT DISPLAY ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A shelf edge-mounted electroluminescent display (10) is disclosed. Plural electroluminescent lights (16, 26) provide illumination through a template (18) which has opaque graphical indicia (20, 28) thereon. The lights (16, 26) are flashed by pulsing ac power thereto. One light (26) is flashed at a first rate, while the other background light (16) is flashed at a slower rate. A proximity sensor (25) detects the presence or movement of approaching objects and activates the flashing lights (16, 26). An age compensating circuit comprising a light sensor (98), a sample and hold amplifier (92) and an integrator (100) which automatically adjusts the ac voltage applied to the lights (16, 26) to compensate for deteriorating output brightness due to lamp age.
